Loneliness and Overeating

"The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself."
Mark Twain

Many people have recently posted about their feelings of loneliness. Loneliness is a big issue in our society and it plays a big role in emotional eating.

Loneliness plays a big role in many types of eating but particularly night binging. My son is going to be seven next week. But I have been raising him alone since he was two months old. I used to notice that a couple of hours after dinner I would wander into the kitchen where I'd have a cookie, then I'd need something salty so I'd have a few chips or a piece of cheese, then sweet again so I'd finish a container of ice-cream. I wasn't even hungry in the first place.

So, what was happening?

For many people, and I was one of them, the night brings up a lot of anxiety and loneliness. At night I used to think about how much I missed raising my son with a partner. The house would be quiet without the noise of a toddler and my thoughts and fears would get too loud. The sound of chewing would distract me from the noise in my head. Only you can answer what you are lonely for; is it love, sex, friends, children, family?

We work in cubicles, we live in isolated apartments, and we parent our children alone. Human beings are social creatures. While we may benefit from solitude, most of us don't like to be alone. I wrote the Mark Twain quote on top because, for me, a lot of my loneliness went away as I became more comfortable with myself and my circumstances. I didn't want to be raising a child alone, but I was. I didn't always like that I was at home caring for a child while all my single friends still had their freedom, but it was a choice I made. The more I could accept reality and be comfortable with myself, the less I needed food. Now, my nights are different. I use the nights to read, watch Netflix, catch up with friends on the phone, and take care of the house.

We at Shrink Yourself understand that getting support on this journey is so important. We are currently working on creating message boards so that you can support each other. I will moderate the boards and answer any questions you have. In the meantime, please post your comments on the most current blog post.

As trite as this may sound, you are not alone, I am reading your comments and understand your struggle.

anne said...

that sounds very interesting and makes sense i find i get panicky at night and problems seem un surrountmountable that when i binge eat and then i feel really guilty and eat more

Gina said...

After reading a few comments, I know my overeating is coming from loniness and depression. I was laid off from my job a few weeks ago and I am very very lonely. I eating is worse at night because I'm bored and I have nothing to look forward to. When I was working my nights were spent traveling or preparing for the next work day. I traveled so much with my job that I don't have a lot of close friends. So I guess food has replaced my job and my friends.

Penny said...

I don't have a problem with night eating. More often it is when I get home from work and have to try to get the supper on the table, and I am starving.

lonliness is a very depressing feeling!

Helps knowing that youre not alone in your struggle. My trigger is my husband. All day long, Im in control and conscious of what goes in my mouth. But the minute I get home just seeing him makes me want to eat. Ive been married 23 boring and uneventful years my view. The past four years have been completely, emotionaless and without sex--communicating my needs only bring up anger, argument and frustration from my spouse. Because of my religious beliefs, divorce is not an option. I know that what is at the bottom of my issue is anger, resentment, hurt, confusion. How do you handle that?

Mary said...

I am a night time binge eater, and loneliness is a big part of it. My husband and sons go about their lives and because I am ill right now, I am not included, so food and television have taken over...I hate it and want to stop...I have one close friend, but when he is unavailable to talk with about how I am feeling, I feel even worse and will actually make myself sick eating...I am praying that this program will help me learn new ways to deal with my emotions

Fran said...

My first week with Shrink Yourself has been overwhelming and scary. I have been eating for emotional reasons since childhood, but only now am I realizing just how much emotional hunger I have. For years I thought my failure to maintain a healthy weight was due to lack of nutritional knowledge, exercise, discipline, time, etc. I am starting to see some of my triggers, and loneliness is a big one. Though the glimpses of awareness are scary, this program gives me hope that I may finally win the battle of the bulge by addressing the things that are keeping me locked in the prison I created.

Dee said...

Good for you. I am 58 and have already raised my son, but I want to say to you, that I cannot imagine the responsibility by myself. You should commend yourself for being so self aware. One of the things that I have observed, maybe a life deduction if you will, is that no matter where you are in life it ALWAYS help having other human beings there for you in the same situation. Keep up the good work, Mom, and know there are folks out there that care.

Luz said...

Yes I am lonely. But am very afraid of getting close to anyone. I tend to keep people that I know at a distant. I know I am eating because Im lonely, Im just not sure about letting anyone in.

Michelle said...

Finally seeing what has contributed to your overeating patterns can be scary but as trite as it sounds awareness is half the battle. Once you can see it, you can stop it.

Jamie said...

Thanks, I will give it my best shot. I did overeat a bit last nite. Couldnt pinpoint anything specific. This defining feelings could be harder than I thought.

Michelle said...

Jamie, Just take it one day at a time. Dont even pick one of the 12 types of emotional hunger to work on just yet. For this week, just begin to observe yourself. Identify what youre really hungry for in the moments you want to eat. This would already be a huge start. Good luck and check back in.

Jamie said...

As a married middle aged empty nester with 7 dogs 4 cats, 3 horses and 50 some odd chickens, youd think I wouldnt be lonely. The dogs really help, but they dont talk back. Which can be a good thing. I have plenty to do on my min farm without having a real job. However, I miss talking to anyone besides my mom. So being lonely is a large part of why I eat. I know it is not the only reason. Unfortunately, I have alot of stars marked on the 12 types of emotional hunger and and not sure which one to tackle first. I suppose if I can make it thru the first week without falling apart emotionally I will be doing well.
