Overeating is the basic cause of obesity. No surprise here, but consider how sensitive our biological weight-control mechanism is to overeating. If you only eat one apple a day more than you need, you will gain 12 pounds every year. Do this for five years and seemingly harmless overeating has made you 60 pounds overweight. Exercise Cannot Overcome Overeating Some people hope they can exercise so much they can overeat as much as they feel like. That is a mistake. Think about your overeating and exercising this way: You can exercise vigorously for two hours and expend 300 to 400 calories. In two minutes of overeating you can easily take in that many calories and more nullifying two hours of grunting and groaning and sweating. How to Recognize Overeating Symptoms Overeating can take many different forms. You can overeat by going on an occasional binge. You can overeat by snacking during the day or taking larger portions than you need or sneaking in an extra dessert. You can overeat by taking in too many liquid calories in the form of soft drinks or alcohol. You can easily fool yourself into thinking that you are not overeating because, let's face it, there are reasons you actually want to overeat. Why Do You Want To Overeat? You want to overeat because you have learned that overeating makes you feel good. Simply put, you overeat for emotional satisfaction. And there's nothing wrong with eating for emotional satisfaction if it doesn't become compulsive overeating. You might overeat to reward yourself when you're feeling blue at times or overeat a little too much during a celebration or just overeat occasionally to fill yourself up because you're feeling empty. But when you overeat as a habit, and you overeat automatically without thinking, you can easily become addicted to overeating by using food to bypass a healthy examination of your life. Understanding yourself better and mastering your emotional responses to life are the keys to stopping your overeating. Emotional Overeating Is a Bad Habit You Can Break Emotional overeating is what actually compels you to overeat without thinking about what you are doing. You might overeat when you are feeling badly, or someone has criticized you or your mate is inattentive, or even too attentive. You might overeat when you are stressed or unhappy or lonely or feeling powerless. This is emotional overeating and it's the root cause of obesity and the major cause for diet failure.
