Article: What is Food Addiction? by Roger Gould, M.D.

Food addiction begins when, at moments of distress in your life, you believe nothing but food can help. Once people regularly use food to relieve distress, it becomes a habit and is the food addict's favored way of dealing with distress.

And since distress is inevitable almost every day of your life, overeating will become a central part of your life. Distress can take many forms: disappointment and tension at home or at work, times when you are just too tired or too overwhelmed to deal with things. When you are convinced you cannot survive without your "fix" of food then you are addicted to food and certain to be overweight.

Is Food Addiction the Same As, Or Worse Than, Other Addictions?

All addictions have something in common. You use the substance to control your moods and feelings and to bring you relief from problems you do not know how to solve. In that sense, food addiction has the same base as alcoholism, smoking, and substance abuse in general.

The big difference is you can stop smoking and stop drinking and still live, but you can never stop eating without starving to death. So food addiction requires a careful plan to break the habit. But building and following this careful plan to break your addiction to food has an important added benefit. Because the plan to end food addiction requires you to learn how to think differently about your life, you will become a more mature person who can more effectively take care of yourself.

The Formula for Curing Food Addiction.

In order to cure food addiction you will need to better understand your own feelings and not be afraid of your feelings and what your feelings mean. I know this is not easy to do but the program I have developed, MasteringFood, can cure your food addiction by helping you do just that. You will overcome your food addiction by building confidence in yourself by dealing directly with your own "inner-critic." MasteringFood will overcome your food addiction behavior when someone makes you feel bad about yourself by teaching you to be more assertive about who you are.

Just to be clear, MasteringFood is not a tape or CD or book simply filled with positive thoughts or "rules" to be memorized or repeated over and over. With techniques developed and tested over a 25 year period, MasteringFood is a highly-personalized interactive twelve week online program that uses the principles of psychological counseling to teach you to change the way you think about yourself and overcome your addiction to food.
